But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.
I will give you no more hiding place down here.
You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness,
Have lain too long
Face down in ignorance.
Your mouths spilling words
Armed for slaughter.
The Rock cries out today, you may stand on me,
But do not hide your face.

Discipline, Courage, and Strength

As a student of history, I am on medium alert to absorb anything historically interesting. It was the other day while on a mind break, i recalled that there was a time in the mid- 1800's that many young students in Canada were dealing daily with the 4 D's - discipline, deportment, decorum, and demeanor. How would that be handled in today's classroom? That thought segued to Sun Tzu, the Chinese military general who was a formidable and powerful war leader, credited for authoring, "The Art of War". On many levels, he dealt with the 4 "D's" in 6th century BC.

A Sun Tzu "Art of Assertive Creative Living", anyone?

MFA THE NEW MBA?

There is no question that there has been a seismic shift within this topic. Gone are the days and nights where left-brain thinkers excel without incorporating right hemispherical abilities within their work. Many are posturing that the high-paying executive careers now filled with 'left-brainers', will be replaced by the 'creatives', otherwise known as the right-brained types. For what has often been denigrated for decades, our right side is no longer deemed  the lesser brain functioning power.

Meditation, creative arts, and music are only several activities to further utilize the right brain. For example, with an opportunity of viewing art, remember this - the very act of seeing involves the ability of our eyes to perceive two different ways. We each tend to favour one over the other - optically or tactilely. Optically, we focus on the light and dark qualities and colour. Tactilely, our eyes reach out with their 'rays' to 'touch' the entity, noticing the dimensional qualities. Initially, the painting's surface quality or texture is noticed. Application of both types of viewing, say, a piece of art, contributes to an awareness of the lights and darks, colours, synthesis, 'warp and weave' and more.

Whether or not, the Master of Fine Arts is the new MBA as posited by many researchers, I agree with Tom Davenport (Harvard Business) that all jobs require input from both sides of the brain. Having a lifestyle which combines and balances  both hemispheres on a daily basis, I will suggest that there are lessons an MBA might learn from an MFA.

WISDOM FROM KINDERGARTEN

Share everything.

Play fair.

Don't hit people.

Put things back where you found them.

Clean up your own mess.

Don't take things that aren't yours.

Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.

Wash your hands before you eat.

Flush.

Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

Live a balanced life-

Learn some and think some

And draw and paint and sing and dance

And play and work everyday some.

Take a nap every afternoon.

When you go out into the world,

Watch out for traffic,

Hold hands and stick together.

Be aware of wonder.

~ Robert Fulghum ~

Right-Brain Connection
Some of my best friends are in the forest. The other day I went to visit a group of my boreal buddies, which I occasionally do, more with spontaneity than concrete planning. At this time of year,  the mountain snowmelts gorges down through this site, transforming the dawdling creek into a raucous river. I was not able to hear much else wherein even the low-flying helicopters were just twirling images.

Heart-warming turned to heart-breaking when upon climbing to the top of a plateau, I encountered charred rocks and debris, and wood. Carnage...everywhere.  Some of my friends had perished. The one I cherished- the smaller but sturdy branched cedar had been hacked and severed for an apparent campfire, judging from the remains of the rock-formed pits.

Research and studies have shown how right-brain connection could alter humankind's presently destructive relationship with nature. Considering that the right brain seems to focus on a holistic sense of connection, it is apparent that we experience this integral feeling of solidarity with our environment, our earth, our cosmos.

Here are a few suggestions for a green(er) consciousness:

* Stop and smell the flowers

* Be outdoors doing whatever connects you to nature - whether making art, hiking, gardening, meditation/yoga/prayer, exploring, music...

* Be present

* Make friends with whatever or whoever brings you joy.

The forest is calling. Trees are awaiting.
